The New Collectors: From One Thing to All
Remember when you said you would never be one of those people? A collector. Everyone has that one family member. You reluctantly went in their space surrounded by porcelain faces, salt and pepper shakers or old diecast cars. You wonder how anyone could amass so many as you see it ... useless things. You never know how the obsession began. You just know to respect your elders and try to understand their untouchable collections. What you never learn is when or why they began their collection. They may have found one of those what nots on a trip to Europe or maybe a grandchild started it all with a gift.
You grow to admire their collection but never wish for that yourself. You want your own aesthetic. You desire simplicity and minimalism. You imagine that in your own life everything is carefully curated. You turn to whatever novelty in the name of decor. You purchase a succulent here or maybe one of those neon cacti. You may have every Miyazaki film, coffee mugs galore or hold onto craft beer bottle tops. This to you is as far as you'll go until you find your own perfect obsession.
When you find it or it finds you embrace it. There is nothing like the thrill of coveting your next addition and placing it within your space. The rummaging of shops and clicks of digital storefronts will never get old. Imagine hunting for the next one or someone surprising you with the eighth. It is never too late to start collecting and a collection can be elevated. Maybe you start with your grandfathers handkerchief to begin a collection of vintage haberdashery. It could be a wall of cameras or whatever your passion is displayed from oldest to newest. Why not start a shelfie-worthy wall of white glass from bud vases to cake stands.
There is no trend in collecting, its entirely personal and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Your other favorite things can and will be dotted in and around the smallest collective be it crystals, books of manga or Star Wars action figures. May whatever it be grow beyond a simple shelf to several niche places in your life. Behind glass, under lights, showcased and displayed for everyone to see.
Go ahead, be one of those people and collect all the things.
